An area of interest to me is the world of insects, heightened by a stint as a scientific illustrator for entomology departments. Butterflies and insects find their way into my watercolors and other media. These emerge as representations of the insect in surreal settings or much more expressionistic impressions. A recent focus was of the amazing life cycle of the Monarch butterfly and their awakening from their over winter habitat in the transvolcanic mountains of Mexico. I tried to capture the aura of the air shimmering with the fluttering wings through the energetic meditative manner I used in applying paint and brush strokes.
